Project Write-Up
I started by looking for inspiration from Michelin Star restaurant menus, and I was inspired to create an elegant, modern and minimalistic menu. The feeling I intend the customer to have from looking at the menu is relaxation and anticipation for the dishes and for them to expect high quality and modern cuisine that excites the palate.
This menu is designed for print but can be placed on a website page as well. The text is placed within the print bleed margins and it can be printed on two sides or in a book format. The typeface is Glacial Indifference. This is a modern, clean font that is easy to read. The size dimensions of the printed menu is 21×40 cm which gives an added sense that this is a unique menu due to the unconventional size.
I divided the menu up according to the type of meal, and I added a house special to make one of the dishes stand out. I decided to make the menu items centred, and the subtitles and ingredients lists are evenly spread out. I kept the price in line with the menu descriptions so that the customer sees the actual ingredients before seeing the price, and I made the price italic so that it somewhat differentiates from the ingredients list. I placed the offers at the top to make it clear to the customer before they order.
The offer section at the top is distinguished by a thin line, so it stands out and does not create confusion about where the actual menu starts. It also helps break the menu up into sections. The divider line is exactly the length of the subtitle so as to not overly dominate the customers attention. I made all the subheadings bold, so they stand out clearly.
I decided against underlining the menu subtitles because it would go against the clean, modern look of the menu. The menu is set across two pages so that the text is not too small and close together.
The “negative” space that is created by centering the text and allowing space between sections and menu subtitles allows the customer to rest their eyes, and because the menu is not busy, it can help the customer feel more relaxed when making their decision.
I added a text about the restaurant at the bottom of the last page to add to the modern and high-quality feel of the menu. The gratuity disclaimer is placed at the bottom of the last page in italics. The title and subtitle are intentionally lowercase to increase the modern feel of the menu.
